Best Sportsbooks in Michigan

Michigan legalized sports betting right near the end of 2019 when Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an expanded gaming bill. There were a number of things included in this legislation, but sports betting was the most important to the state.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board worked quickly to establish retail sports betting, but it took much longer to roll out online sports betting options. Michigan also failed to see much growth in sports betting until online betting was available.

A full suite of iGaming options was rolled out in January 2021, and sports betting immediately started producing terrific results. Michigan has the chance to become one of the biggest sports betting markets in the US.

Retail Sportsbooks in Michigan

When Michigan first launched sports betting back in March 2020, retail sports betting was the only format that was available. Restrictions kept most of these properties closed down for many months, and retail sports betting never really took off.

Each commercial and tribal casino in Michigan was allowed to partner with a sports betting operator to provide a retail sportsbook. There are just three commercial casinos in the state, but Michigan is home to a number of tribal casino properties.

Here are the three commercial casinos that currently have a sportsbook:

  • Greektown Casino
  • MGM Grand Detroit
  • MotorCity Casino

There is a long list of tribal casino properties in the state that can offer sports betting, and these on the list below have already started doing just that:

  • Bay Mills Resort & Casino
  • FireKeepers Casino
  • Leelanau Sands Casino
  • Northern Waters Casino Resort
  • Odawa Casino Resort
  • Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel

Casinos that hold a retail sports betting license were also permitted to offer online sports betting options as well. Most casinos already had an online operator in place, while other casinos sought out some of the biggest names in the industry. See all Free Bets & Risk Free Bets

Online sports betting officially launched in January 2021, and it has been extremely successful in the first two months. Here are some of the top online sports betting options in Michigan:

Top Teams in Michigan

Michigan might not have some of the most successful teams when it comes to professional sports, but there is a rich history in the state. All of the top professional teams are located in the city of Detroit, but there are also some popular college teams scattered throughout as well.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are easily the most popular team in the state of Michigan, even though this franchise has not had much success. Betting on the NFL dominates the US sports betting industry, and the Lions will play a large role in the success of sports betting in Michigan.

Detroit Pistons

The National Basketball Association has worked with sportsbooks to promote legal US sports betting, and that should make the Detroit Pistons a popular betting market. Detroit has not had much success in recent years, but they are still popular with basketball fans throughout the state.

Detroit Tigers

Betting and baseball don’t normally mix, but that will change during the summer months in the state of Michigan. The Detroit Tigers compete in the American League Central Division, and this team has had periods of great success in recent years.

Detroit Red Wings

Betting on the NHL is not extremely popular in the United States, but that is not expected to be the case in Michigan. Even though the Detroit Red Wings have not been very successful of late, this is still one of the most storied franchises in the sports. Fans clock to home games for the Red Wings, and bettors will also flock to sportsbooks to bet on the team.

College Teams

Michigan bettors are allowed to bet on in-state college teams, and that has really helped the market grow in the state. The Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines are the two biggest and most popular basketball and football teams in the state.

There are also some smaller schools that compete at the Division I level that bring in some betting action. Hockey is another sport that is popular in the state, and sportsbooks will offer betting options for this sport.
